Learn how to Shibori Indigo Dye Your Textiles

A Introduction to Shibori Indigo Dyeing: Craft, Culture, and History

Have you ever wanted to dye your own clothes? Have you been gushing over indigo-dyed textiles and wish you could dye your own?

Textile dyeing may seem like it is super complicated, but with the right set up and materials you'll be creating your own designs in no time!

I started shibori indigo dyeing when I was young -- I was a bit obsessed with tie-dyeing as a kid and I consider this my first exposure to textile dyeing. As an adult, I experimented with dyeing my own handmade dresses. I learned more about natural dyeing while I ran design and production at menswear company Betabrand, where we had a whole line of clothes that were naturally dyed.

More recently, I spent a few months in Oaxaca, Mexico on a self-guided art residency where I took various natural dye courses from local artisans who have been using their families' recipes to naturally dye wool.

I started teaching shibori indigo dye workshops about three years ago and have led many workshops since! I absolutely love seeing how amazed everyone is when they unfold their textiles and see what they created.

This course is a culmination of my experience and research in shibori indigo dyeing. In this course, you will learn the history of indigo and shibori, how to do your own shibori indigo dyeing project using tea towels, ideas on how to experiment, and how to lead your own Distill Creative indigo shibori dyeing workshop.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to confidently shibori indigo dye your own textiles. You'll also have resources to try different types of dye baths and experiment with other dyes.

With the knowledge and skills you learn in this course, you'll be able to dye any textile you want and create your own designs. Whether you're looking to update an old t-shirt or start your own fashion line, this course will help you get there!

This course is for you if:

  • You want to learn how to shibori indigo dye your own textiles or clothes
  • You don't have any experience dyeing, but you are interested in learning!
  • You're looking for a fun, easy way to be creative and make something unique.
